WHAT IS AN EATING DISORDER?

Eating disorders are serious mental health conditions characterized by disturbances in food intake and eating behaviors, as well as compensatory behaviors such as purging, compulsive exercise, and laxative abuse in some conditions. A preoccupation with food and body (weight, size, and shape), and body image disturbances, may present as well.

The impact of eating disorders is widespread, often leading to a compromise in one’s physical, emotional, psychological, and social functioning. Eating disorders are serious and can be life-threatening, as they may contribute to medical complications such as anemia, bone loss and weakness, the absence of menstruation, malnutrition, and more. The treatment of eating disorders typically requires interdisciplinary care with a medical doctor, therapist, and nutritionist.

HOW WE TREAT eating disorders

Freedom from an eating disorder and disordered eating is possible! We utilize evidence-based treatment modalities and offer an integrated approach to treating eating disorders: metacognitive therapy (thinking about our thinking) to address errors in reasoning that keep a person buying into the eating disorder, mindfulness skills training to help a person non-judgmentally observe intrusive thoughts, feelings, sensations, etc. without engaging with them in unhelpful ways, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) to enhance distress tolerance and emotional regulation skills, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to promote values-based living, and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) that focuses on gradually facing feared stimuli (such as fear foods) while simultaneously cutting out compulsive and compensatory rituals.
